Following the devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, Christchurch was left with very few community sports facilities. The Government commissioned Warren and Mahoney to create a ‘Blueprint’ for the regeneration of the city, and through that process the concept of a large centralised Sports Hub was envisaged. Subsequent to completing the blueprint, Warren and Mahoney was separately engaged to undertake a detailed masterplan and briefing in 2014, and was duly appointed as the lead consultant, architect and interior designer for the project in 2015. The project is now under construction.
The Metro Sports Facility will be a world class venue and centre of excellence, accessible to people of all ages, abilities and skills. The facility will cater for the day-to-day needs of the recreational, educational and high-performance sporting communities, as well as providing the capability to host national and international events.
At 30,000m2, Metro Sports combines a large programme of sport and wellness facilities under one roof on a 6 hectare site. The challenge of such a large scale building was overcome through the creation of a central social hub which collects and connects all users and activities in a space that puts sport on display.
The Metro Sports Facility includes an indoor aquatic hall with a 79 metre, 10-lane competition pool and seating for over 1000 spectators, a leisure pool area including hot pools and hydroslides, nine indoor courts for sports such as netball and basketball, and retractable seating for 2,500 spectators. This is augmented by sports administration spaces for local organisations and a High Performance Sport facility including an indoor running track.
