Michelia is a major remodelling of an existing townhouse property situated in a quiet high-end residential area by Cheung Sha Beach along the South Lantau coast.
ARK’s initial vision, after visiting the existing property, was to conceptualise and transform the existing characterless architecture into a series of contemporary relaxed resort villas. With every unit having its own garden, the existing windows of the living spaces was enlarged to full height operable bi-fold doors to connect the living space to the garden and deck to promote indoor / outdoor living lifestyle. The existing box like architecture was transformed into planar expressions by extending wall planes to give the architecture a sense of lightness and imply continuity and extension of space.
The landscape design also shapes an experiential circulation path from the property’s entry point to each unit’s entrance. Planters along the staircase, greenery on roof combine to create the sense of living in nature.
The design utilizes simple, durable exterior finishes in a minimal palette of high contrast tones of black and whites that sets the architecture to capture the island’s natural hills, sea and sky.
