Project Overview
Located 31 km from Melbourne’s CBD in the fast-growing western growth corridor, The Grove will be home to around 2,600 families once complete. Already an established community, The Grove will ultimately include a town centre retail precinct, primary and secondary schools, community facilities and a sporting oval, all connected to parklands and waterways and the wider neighbourhood by walking and cycle paths.
The Grove’s naturally stunning landscape is bordered by two waterways, Davis Creek in the east and the Werribee River in the south, with planned wetlands and connected waterways in between.
Our Role
SMEC’s Landscape Architecture team together with our Civil Engineering team are responsible for the concept design through to delivery of 10+ hectares of amenity area, including the wetlands park and associated parklands and built waterways. Our teams have worked to seamlessly integrate these significant features into the 167-hectare community.
The overall design approach leverages and draws inspiration from the expansive views and the site’s natural assets to create a scenic waterfront lifestyle enriched through the landscape environment.
The waterways and wetlands park aspire to promote community engagement and active lifestyle choices whilst performing both a sustainable and ecological function. The expansive wetlands system will enhance the ecological footprint of the surrounding river environments of Tarneit by creating a thriving ecosystem for local bird and frog species. It also aids in preserving the health of the surrounding waterways and improving the water quality flowing into the Werribee River by capturing the sediment and nutrients in the low flow stormwater. The shared play and picnic spaces, walk and cycle paths are destined to attract visitors and be popular with local residents.
Adjoining the wetlands is the shared use path, which is the principal network path for the Werribee River Township Regional Park, incorporating seating which overlooks the wetlands and Growling Grass Frog Conservation Reserve.
Our overall civil engineering scope of work includes delivery of 1,700 lots, dual carriageway collector roads, signalised intersections, 11 hectares of wetlands, 2 km of waterways, 3 km of branch sewers as well as the local roads, drainage, water and sewer reticulation and the coordination of gas, electrical and communications services.
Our landscape architecture scope of work includes the design and delivery of the wetlands park plus streetscapes, bridges, playgrounds, pavilions and shelters to provide further opportunities for the community to enjoy the outdoors.
In addition, we are supporting Frasers with the master-programming of the project to ensure all phases are delivered in a timely manner, mitigating the risk of delay and ensuring the program can be accelerated to meet market requirements.
