The Cruising Yacht Club by AJ+C
AJ+C successfully led the redevelopment of The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. The club’s design combines modern and classic features in its traditional location on the Rushcutters Bay foreshore.
The Club engaged AJ+C for the refurbishment for the new clubhouse. The client wanted to improve the clubhouse facilities to provide increased benefit to CYCA members, guests of members, visitors to the club, and staff. The last major renovation of the club house facilities occurred in 1998/9 to coincide the expected demands from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
The new Clubhouse, with improved accessibility, increased space and flow, and enhanced comfort, is sure to delight both Members and guests. The refurbished CYCA Clubhouse combines everything people loved in the old building history-filled trophy cabinets and sailing memorabilia and great views, but with the comfort, convenience and safety features expected today.
The design provides a more contemporary and sophisticated look and feel whilst at the same time responding to its location by the water and adjoining park. From the entrance – where a five-tonne CYCA-branded concrete-carved hull anchors the reception desk – contemporary finishes in a monochromatic palette referencing sailing motifs give way on the upper level to a warmer, classic selection of materials with spotted gum timber wall panelling, joinery, and brass fittings akin to the interior of a luxury yacht. The new-look CYCA Clubhouse also features the latest technology and improvements that highlight the Club’s commitment to a more sustainable future with energy-efficient LED lighting, kitchen and bar equipment. Topping off the refurbishment, literally, are the solar panels to reduce the ever-increasing electricity costs.
