Facing Bowen Street, this small structure creates a ‘student tower’ and beacon at the centre of the new precinct formed by the wider infrastructural works associated with New Academic Street. At plaza level, the new structure makes a covered public space, permanently open and served by a small café. Two levels above are workshop-studio style flexible rooms that can be linked to the library or operated independently. The top level is a social roof terrace, a lively space as part of the suite of landscape spaces at this new level of major public circulation. The structure also acts as a large staircase allowing pedestrian access from Bowen Street up to the new landscape, spiraling around the perimeter. A structural grid of 6×6 metres forms a new relationship to the existing buildings and allows glue-lam solid timber columns and beams to provide flexible live load capacity of 5KPa and 1 hour charring factor for fire protection. Landscape is provided in a variety of large pots, responding to microclimate conditions.
