Therefore, a world-famous Basketball field in New York, Rucker Park, was the major inspiration driving the design process targeted in flourishing a creative hub for the youth; where the basketball field lays a significant influence to cultural diversity growth in Harlem, New York. As pop-culture is thriving in a cultural city of where local tradition possesses a strong anchor, a question is consequently raised to the disparity of global-local cultures. How will architecture address a design of the third-place to raise a global thinking of the youth, yet still acting like locals?
The site was formerly a house in a trapezoid shape, situated at the intersection of Dr. Cipto, Dr. Rum, and Dr. Gunawan Street. The massing was done in a manner to preserve the preceding ambiance of the neighbourhood, by a way of elongating the existing diagonal grid stretching out to the street. Derived from Harlem’s global culture, reconstructing street features is, therefore, the core guidelines. An industrial street ambiance is conveyed through the rawness of materiality: concrete, brick, wood, and steel with a bold touch of matte black. Likewise, the cornerstone of local habits for a gathering is provided by user programming in dynamic composition and openness of the space. A black box at the entrance aims to draw people’s attention, while its presence gives a privacy to the front courtyard – for the community activity such as subculture events and sharing class take place. Natural lighting is inserted into the indoor area, where allows energy efficiency during the day. Meanwhile, the outdoor area was accentuated by natural materials and built-in concrete bench as a tribune for social occasions.
Since the site hosts two different family businesses of a restaurant by the mother and a coffee shop by the son, therefore, a connection to strengthen the business needs to be established. In order to answer current urban life where time and productivity are mutually substantial, an area of coffee-to-go is provided while conjoining to the restaurant alongside.
