The background of the story of RumaDuaBata is an old house that is almost uninhabitable, occupied since 1989 on an area of 7 x 20m with 2 building faces. The rooms grow organically without a plan, once stay 7 people here and the furniture fills the house. The decision for the total renovation came from the ceiling collapsing due to heavy rains. A total renovation is needed for the safety of the client.
The concept of this old house is to revive the 2 sides of the old wall, the right and left boundary walls with red bricks remain in this house as a symbol of memories, that is the original idea of the RumaDuaBata concept.
Because this house has 2 faces, the first discussion is about determining the main entrance based on the client's address information, and the other side of the house faces the public facility park, so nice to put the living room on the other side to enjoy the trees & the breeze. On the first floor, there is only one bedroom for the parent-in-law and the public areas such as the living & dining room. There is a master bedroom and 2 children's bedrooms on the second floor. Also, old furniture is reused.
Social considerations are needed as neighborhoods look already crowded. The architects & client agree to put a low profile look as the facade of the house. A Simple white square façade with vegetation as the final look combines match with the client’s needs.
The main challenge of this project is at the construction stage regarding the high groundwater level because construction starts in the rainy season. Then it was decided to raise the floor level to 1 meter.
This project's success story is based on the architect's efforts to observe the client well and get the bigger picture to better know the client’s needs. An old house is brought back to life with a new room flanked by bricks filled with memories.
