This 800sqm residence is a collaboration of a Korean architect and an Indonesian interior designer. Modern architecture is complemented by warm inviting feel in the interior design. Simplicity and sense of timelessness is key in this home. One of the challenges faced during the project is the fact that this was the client’s first house in Indonesia. As a foreigner, a lot of adjustments were customized to their needs. From the slightly low-ceiling guestroom to the general colour scheme. The client’s request is to let the space flow to be as open as possible so that they can watch activities around the house from any directions. Celebrating movement and procession, the result is a clean space planning with proportionally balanced furnishing. Easily maintained materials were chosen to accommodate practical and functional way of life. The aim is for the house to portray their character. Elegance is imbued to the house as it is completed by a beautiful collection of Korean contemporary art.
One of the eco principles used here is the application of adaptive reused materials, traditional natural Borneo weaving, which was previously installed in an interior design exhibition. The client decided to purchase the piece and incorporated it in the living room area. Not only celebrating crafts, this notion also brings Indonesian touch as it generates a sense of connection and locality. A number of large windows allow natural light to bathe the residence and help to save daily energy consumption. For furniture option, timeless designer classic pieces were chosen as the client sees it as an investment. The thought is by buying good quality and original pieces, they will last longer, both functionally and visually. The idea behind the concept of purchasing ‘what is necessary only’ truly contributes to today’s consumeristic society. This value relates to the belief of living more by having less. As design keeps evolving, it is important to create design that lasts.
This project is a beautiful collaboration and visual dialogue between a Korean architect that is based in Seoul and an Indonesian interior designer based in Jakarta. The fact that we are all coming from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds inspired and embraced us to work together with plural voices to sculpt and achieve a common goal: to create a space that is a reflection of the unique passion and interest of our client, to embrace the season of comfort of a home. At the end of the day, we are very delighted to see how this teamwork is successful in expressing the client’s modern design vision and functional aesthetic. Quiet and understated from the outside, the seamless blend of outdoor and indoor fosters a sense of the interior as an urban oasis with an ability to elevate the experience and create a consciously serene sanctuary in the heart of the city. The visual result is a perfect conversation of intimacy and a language of the observation of daily life and culture.
