Since the establishment of CUHK in the past 60 years, there have been 135 alumni associations of different academies, colleges, departments, etc., all over the world. The Alumni Association is a platform for alumni to communicate, which can unite alumni and spread the spirit of CUHK. However, for many years, there has been no space for alumni gatherings on the campus. The school recently allocated the basement of the Fulton Building on the campus as a venue for alumni gatherings and activities.
Venue for alumni associations are generally grand and luxurious, so as not to be incompatible with the design of nearby school buildings, this design boldly adopts a simple and natural design style. The architectural style of CUHK has the characteristics of that era: for example, the exterior of the building is grid-like, but it also serves as a shading device. Modern architecture often uses this design to block excessive sunlight from entering the room and as a cooling effect. We have kept all the windows of the building itself as the surrounding windows can bring the outdoor view of the sea and trees into the room at the same time. With no partition wall blocking, people can view the landscape in 270-degree, making the scenery a part of the interior decoration. As for the different functional areas, we use a shelf to separate the gathering space. The pattern of the shelf is evolved from three groups of grid lines, forming a repeated mirror image, responding to the rugged facade design of the campus building with multiple levels. There is a frosted glass wall behind the shelf, which is also used to separate different spaces.
Many potted plants are arranged in the interior to create a feeling of nature and deepen the impression of CUHK campus that blends into nature. We hope that this space will make them feel close to nature. In addition to its own functions, the center extends the impression of the campus, bringing the outdoor scenery indoors. There are also many photos of students on campus and photos of different student activities in the room. Various student organizations in the university are listed on the glass map, which further evokes the good memories of alumni back in school days.
