Construction and Completion of Conservation, Renovation and Interior Refurbishment Works of Saujana, Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Takzim (The Official Residence of The Menteri Besar of Johor) for The Johor State Government.
One of the first projects of our firm in 1996 was the conservation, renovation and interior refurbishment of an old colonial mansion in Johor Bahru that had been the official residence of the Menteri Besar for many decades, beginning with Tan Sri Haji Hassan bin Haji Yunus after he was appointed to the post in 1959, Tan Sri Ghani Othman who presided over the project, till the present MB today. Saujana is located at Jalan Hassan Al-Attas near Jalan Abdul Rahman Andak.
The scope of work for the project was to carry out conservation work on dilapidated portions of the building, design external additions to the front porch and function terraces at the back, modernise the bathrooms and the kitchens, and carry out design and refurbishment of the interior spaces. To achieve effective and authentic conservation of the mansion, selection of old or current but matching materials, the correct construction methodology, and the selection of suitable furniture are paramount considerations for the designers. Jafri Merican Architect carried out the project in collaboration with the special projects department of Jabatan Kerja Raya (Public Works Department).
