Aamer Architects Designed Merryn Road 40ª - Singapore
“Tan’s Garden Villa”
Back in 2001, Mr. Adrian Tan commissioned the firm Aamer Architects to design his house(s) at No 42 Merryn Road. This resulted in a large bungalow plot being divided into two to accommodate separate, yet identical houses. These went on to win the prestigious Singapore Institute of Architects’ Design Award in 2004.
Some ten years later Tan acquired the plot next door, No. 40, with the intention of building another home. He wanted this third home so that he and his wife would have one for themselves, and leaving one for each of their two grown-up sons for their future families.
The idea, therefore, was to design the new home in sync with the previous two but differing slightly in order to keep them unique. For this new home, Tan specifically requested a garden courtyard and koi pond. This resulted in the swimming pool being designed on the roof with amazing views over the estate and surrounding houses, which mostly consist of 2-storey bungalows.
For this new house, since the sons were already in their late teens and early twenties, they wanted more space and privacy. This resulted in an interesting planning layout that placed the boys’ rooms outdoors via a verandah terrace, allowing them their own accessibility from the ground right up to the rooftop entertainment room and pool garden terrace.
