About Here Studio

Here Studio is a team of professional architects in Melbourne, Horsham and Ballarat with a history of innovative and social practices, focussing on delivering architecture services for everyone through participatory design and collaboration. We began 11 years ago as a development of Urban Village Melbourne, a non-profit association using art, architecture, events, participation and activism for multi-disciplinary projects. Working as part of the community, we used our architectural background to activate urban change and demonstrate inclusive, asset-based methodologies. A series of strategic projects led to our design and leadership of the participatory design process for the Civic Hall Site in Ballarat from 2014 to 2016, combining engagement and participatory design with architecture. Since 2016 we have focussed on delivering affordable architecture, often for residential architecture clients who wouldn’t typically use architects. We have clear systems and methods to do this sustainably while retaining our values of listening, beauty, humility, responsiveness, strategy and a second-wave feminist approach. We understand the important skills that architectural training and practise develop, and we work hard to make these skills accessible to others. In parallel, we continued to research, teach and run community engagement, and director Ammon Beyerle completed his PhD in Architecture and Participation. Through experimenting and testing working methods, we developed our values into clear, up-to-date and project-specific methodologies, allowing us to work heuristically to provide meaningful engagement through project delivery and evaluation.
