A wooden floor is always beautiful in its simple natural form. But for various reasons, you may want to enhance the impression with a bright surface treatment. Perhaps the wood is full of knots, such as some plain pine floors, and could benefit from being stained to give a more subdued impression. Perhaps your customer wants to create that Scandinavian feeling in the room, and then a light wooden floor is an obvious choice. Lye and white pigmented oil is a common surface treatment method, but the fact is that even a lacquered floor can give the right look. And with varnish comes advantages such as increased wear resistance and reduced maintenance requirements.
Varnish is the basis for the right look
As with all floor renovations, the work starts with professional sanding. The choice of surface treatment method determines which sanding sequence should be applied, i.e. which sandpaper and grit sizes are suitable. After that, the base coat is the most important factor in giving the floor the right look. A light base coat gives a white-pigmented appearance and helps to even out the shade differences the wooden floor may have. In the long term, the right choice of primer also means that the yellowing process of the wood can be reduced, so that the floor maintains its bright impression year after year. For those who care about leaving behind a good work, the choice to always use a primer is important. The risk of lateral gluing is reduced, while at the same time you create the conditions for excellent adhesion of the top coat. Everything so that your customer is really satisfied with the end result and sustainability.
The top coat seals and protects
If the base coat controls the look and feel, then the top coat is crucial for preserving the freshness of the floor in the long term. The choice of topcoat is mostly about what function the floor should have. Keep in mind that you often do not need to recommend the most durable varnish to a private customer. If the floor is in a protected home environment, for example in a bedroom, the demands on wear resistance are relatively low, and then a waterborne 1-component top coat is ideal. The same partly applies to lightly trafficked public environments, with the addition that this top coat should be slightly more durable. When we come to the majority of public environments, the demands on wear resistance are high, and then a strong 2-component top coat is required that is not worn down by shoes, dirt and other stresses. If the base coat creates the right look, the top coat provides protection and that final touch. Keep in mind that the degree of gloss also makes a big difference, choose between ultra matt, extra matt, matt, silk matt and glossy.
Choose products that work together
It pays to think holistically. Choosing proven products and systems that you know work. It doesn't matter how well you succeeded with the sanding, if the primer does not give the floor the look your customer is after. The key to a successful result lies in choosing products that have been developed to work well together. Bona has well-proven systems that give you as a flooring contractor exactly the security you need.
