With a stunning new inclined elevator going into service at Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower, Otis Elevator (China) Co Ltd (“Otis”) has completed its largest modernization project in China and revitalized one of the world’s most famous iconic landmarks.
Opened in 1994, the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower is a 468-meter-high sightseeing attraction with 14 Otis elevators that welcomes more than 5 million visitors a year. In 2017, Otis started to modernize the Tower’s elevators to expand their passenger-handling capacity. Three sightseeing elevators were upgraded to Skyrise® double-deck units. A new inclined elevator was added and provides an exciting experience for new and returning visitors.
Installing an elevator shaft in a 60-degree inclined tunnel is challenging work, especially since it is the first Otis elevator of its kind in China. To ensure smooth execution, the project team, comprised of local and international Otis experts in engineering and service worked day and night for two months to complete the complex installation.
