With the “Megapress” piping system from Viega, thick-walled steel pipes can be pressed “cold”, for example in heating, cooling or sprinkler systems. Thanks to the addition of “Megapress S” in 3/8 to 2 inch sizes, the range now also provides quick and secure connection technology for district heating installations according to AGFW FW 524 as from the building entry point or for industrial installations involving media temperatures up to 140 °C. The “Megapress S” connectors are equipped with a round FKM sealing element, and are unambiguously identifiable by a white dot on the press connection as well as by the designation “FKM”.
The Viega “Megapress” and “Megapress S” piping systems have made installing thick-walled steel pipes much more economical and much safer. Thanks to the “cold” press connection technique, pipe connections from 3/8 to 2 inches can be made as much as 60 percent faster than by welding. And residual water in the pipelines is not longer a problem with the “cold” press connection technique. That means on-site working procedures are greatly sped up. The method is also safer, as work is no longer carried out with an open flame. And a fire watch is now likewise no longer required.
For industry experts, these working benefits are especially advantageous on industrial and other large-scale installations, for which previously only specially trained welders could be deployed. With the “Megapress” piping system, such installations can now be carried out by any HVAC and plumbing trade professional. That represents a key competitive edge, especially at a time when skilled staff are at a premium.
Versatile in use
The new “Megapress S” connectors featuring round FKM sealing elements in 3/8 to 2 inch sizes can be used in installations subject to operating temperatures up to 140 °C and pressures up to 16 bar. Typical of such installations are industrial applications involving higher thermal loads, or primary and secondary lines in local and district heating systems as from the building entry point.
Viega has certified the suitability of “Megapress S” connectors featuring FKM sealing elements in 3/8 to 2 inch sizes for use in district heating installations as from the building entry point in accordance with technical guideline AGFW FW 524 through the North Rhine-Westphalia materials testing agency MPA in Dortmund. The ageing of the materials used has also been tested, including by the district heat research institute FFI in Hanover and by the Richter O-ring test lab. The new “Megapress S” connectors are also TÜV and VdS certified.
SC-Contur provides security
The “Megapress S” connectors are made of 1.0308 grade steel and have a zinc-nickel coating. They may be used in combination with steel pipes according to DIN EN 10255 in threaded pipe quality and in boiler pipe quality according to DIN EN 10220/10216-1 and DIN EN 10220/10217-1. As well as the installation of seamless, welded, black or galvanised pipes, installation with industrially painted or epoxy resin coated pipes is also possible. The familiar “Megapress” press jaws and press rings with hinged adapter jaws are used to press the “Megapress S” connectors.
Like all Viega connectors, the “Megapress S” connectors also have an SC-Contur. This means that unpressed connections are detected directly during the leakage test. After pressing, the connector is reliably tight, and can be immediately subjected to full loading.
