The clients wanted a tropical house which respected their specific fengshui requirements. These requirements dictated the positioning of the main entrance to face west and that there should be no internal courtyard.
To enable more openess and natural ventialtion, a concession was made to have a small cut-out courtyard on the northern side. This resulted in an almost U-shaped form with living and dining spaces on the opposite arms of the U on the first storey.
On the second storey, the master-suite takes up the whole length of one arm, and the children’s bedrooms on the opposite arm of the U. The centre of the U is the staircase with a triple-volume void. The courtyard has a fish pond over which stepping stones connect the living space to the dining space.
As the site is elevated above the rear properties, it enjoys some inherent visual privacy. The pool is located at the rear, taking advantage of the width of the site to have a decent lap size. The living and dining areas are orientated towards the rear and to the pool. An informal living room is located at the front, and opens onto a large patio onto which overhanging creepers form a curtain of privacy.
A large overhanging roof provides the necessary shelter to the second storey at the front where the study and son’s bedroom adjoin through a balcony. Views on the second storey and attic towards the rear are optimized with balconies.
