The Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) estimate that over the next 10 years up to 75% of jobs will require STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). As a result, DECD have invested $250 million toward new infrastructure across 139 South Australian Schools to support STEM learning.
Following a successful partnership with Freeling Primary School, Department for Education and Child Development and Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) we were commissioned to design and build a dedicated STEM facility at Freeling Primary.
The project entailed renovation works to seamlessly integrate the new works into the existing administration building. A series of colourful display boxes inside the main entry showcase STEM disciplines and create an engaging entrance to the new facility.
The space was configured to allow teachers to simultaneously manage and teach both individual students, and groups, while open space creates opportunities for students to engage in STEM activities including robotics and science experiments. Throughout the process our design was informed by input from specialist acoustic consultants to minimise noise transmission to other learning spaces.
