Nanchang is a city which has a long connection with water, where a famous Chinese poem says that "落霞与孤鹜齐飞,秋水共长天一色". Our proposal consists of separate office and apartment towers, connected by a new joy city mall which is situated on the lower floors of this complex. This project draws inspiration from the surrounding abundant water system, where taking the sparkling Gan River as inspiration, we used a large number of flowing ‘arc elements’ in the facade and use warm orange hues as the main color to create a youthful and dynamic commercial atmosphere.
In the design of the commercial podium, we fully considered specific requirements for commercial units, where we selected different facade treatment methods according to the characteristics of specific commercial units. Throughout the facade we used a ‘double skin’ building envelope, in combination to applying glass and colored walls, which form a dynamic contrast echoing the dynamic and youthful atmosphere the shopping mall wants to create. We also used multiple large LED screens upon the building’s facade, which have a relationship to the pedestrian circulation of the site. ‘Mushroom’ shaped shading devices are set upon the roof of the commercial podium, where roof garden terraces face the street and combine with the water landscape of Nanchang to create a unique atmosphere and commercial experience.
The office tower rises 45 floors above the Joy City Mall, stands around 202 meters in height. The facade is composed of a glass curtain wall, with white aluminum panels, which are used to symbolize abstract sails, these ‘spreading sails’ on the facade further reflect Nanchang’s connection to the water. The apartment tower rises 28 floors above the Joy City Mall and consists of 768 households. Here, the façade of the apartment tower is formed from its functional requirements. We carefully consider the design of horizontal air-conditioning within the facade, where we also incorporate ‘gradient-color’ arc components between the windows which, supplemented by lighting design create a dynamic visual effect of similar to that of fireworks.
