Status : Preliminary Design
Scale : 4-Storeys and 1 Basement Level
Building Height : 38 m
Forming part of the coastal skyline of Lusail’s Marina District is this brave attempt in creating a formidable building – the Qatar Marina Mall.
The Mall is located off the main road and neighbors to two other waterfront development. With frontage to the waterfront marina cove, promenade and vehicular entrance, the Mall is readily accessible via road, walkway or by the sea. Its design serves to integrate the building with the surrounding marina district. The Marina Mall has a proposed area of approximately 100,000 m2, spread over 4 levels with over 60% of retail space.
The services to the mall, is kept at the basement with separate entrances for visitors to allow for a cleaner and fuss-free façade treatment. The space is divided into 2 district zones, for retail and circulation. The atrium as the oasis has a visual connection to the sea and sky and the shopping mall.
This atrium is a triangular glass shaped structure that brings visitors right into the marina and docking platforms. This potentially creates a great area for direct interaction with the coastal activities in the area. Integrated into the glass atrium are landscape pools with surrounding platforms for bazaar and other activities, such as trade fair, fashion shows, exhibition and local food fair. Flanked on the 2 sides with other waterfront development, both fronts of the building are treated with glass façade, enabling visual connection with its surrounding.
The glass skylight also allows natural daylight to filter into the mall. With the abundant use of light and the articulation of structure elements, the building gains its present dynamism. Sun-shading has also been considered for all the glassed-up areas. Clearly the dynamic form sets the benchmark for waterfront development in Qatar region.
