JCA were appointed by QUT to undertake the design and refurbishment of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Faculty located on level 11 of S Block at the Gardens Point Campus. The brief was to create a dynamic work space for humans and robots alike. JCA worked closely with QUT to transform the existing space to specifically suit the needs of the QUT Robotics faculty and various stakeholders. The fit out offers a series of robot workrooms, breakout areas, robot charging stations, meeting rooms and open plan work areas where robots will roam freely around the space that aim to promote increased collaboration and a sharing of ideas. The flexibility was an essential component of QUT’s vision along with minimising the extent of offices as a way of encouraging a greater cross pollination of ideas and promotion of increased interface between staff and students. The fit out was inspired by iconic robots and other robotic references and includes custom R2D2 light fittings, writable wall panelling with LED lighting and a carefully selected choice of furniture and finishes.
