Sound Tunnel is a responsive public space ideated by Yuta Nakayama for the first Urban design Festival in Singapore. The installation is site-specific and has been conceived for an existing underpass. The passage of pedestrians is transformed into an interactive experience of light and sound.
Motion detectors installed at both ends of the tunnel recognize passenger’s entrance and create a dynamic propagation of light and sound alongside the walls of the tunnel. The arrival of another passenger generates a new wave of colors and sound. The streams of light from both ends will eventually collide and mix together. The new color combination will generate a different noise pattern to celebrate this unplanned encounter.
The full spectrum of colors and noise, sensor-activated by our transit, represents metaphorically the articulate range of feelings, thoughts, and sensations that are accompanying us while we are walking. Beyond the inner monologue, the aspect of our physical interaction with space will be manifested and shared with other people passing by. Sound Tunnel is a little reflection about the ambiguous coexistence of urban narratives fluctuating from personal to the collective experience.
