This Wharewaka home is sited on an escarpment overlooking Lake Taupo with views orientated towards Mt Ruapehu and the Central Plateau.
The brief was for a family home which could be occupied solely by the parents (occupation of the living wing only) or with the entire tribe in the second sleeping wing. Site considerations included privacy from adjacent properties, shelter from cold south west winds and maximising sunlight.
Accordingly the two wings in concert with the garaging, are arranged to form an internal sheltered courtyard. The form of the building is deliberately ‘singular’ in the tradition of the bach, and the exterior is dressed with a screen of vertical stained timber, which mirrors the texture and colour of the local sub alpine flora.
Interiors are plain and light, a deliberate ‘feminising’ which contrasts with the strong exterior treatment. High emphasis has been placed on ESD with increased insulation, double glazing and solar heating utilised.
AWARDS WON:
> 2009 NZIA – Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Award
> 2008 NZ Wood – Timber Design Award
