Centennial Woods® is all about repurposed wood; we build, maintain, and eventually reclaim weathered wood from the hundreds of miles worth of 12 foot tall snow fences lining Wyoming roadways. Snow fences near highways and interstates help to keep snow drifts away from traffic. After 7 – 10 years the weathered boards are taken down and repurposed into a variety of interior and exterior products like wall/ceiling paneling, siding, and decor items. While traveling through Wyoming on summer road trips both kids and adults wonder what these large wooden structures are for. Locals like to tease tourists by telling them “they’re the bleachers for watching antelope races.” In reality, they are an important part of a winter driving safety program that helps to keep roadways safe and interstate commerce flowing.
The Wyoming climate is so varied and intense that after a decade our wood’s moisture content is only between 4% and 8% making it inhospitable to insects. This allows our wood to skip the energy-intensive process of kiln drying which contributes towards making snow fence reclaimed wood a carbon-negative product. Centennial Woods® has repurposed more than 25 million feet of reclaimed wood and avoided more than 20,000 tons of CO2 emissions since 1999.
