Locaāhands Dining Club Uses Local Materials to Create A Timeless Design
Locaāhands Dining Club is a restaurant located in Surabaya that specializes in wood fire menus. True to the dedication in committing sustainable construction, the restaurant design revolves around retaining as much of the original house foundation as possible. In terms of concept, the owner wanted a timeless space and a blank canvas supporting the restaurant's seasonal wood fire-based menu.
The name Locaāhands given by the owner means "local hands". In honor of this name, the designers focus on using local materials for the restaurant. All Locaāhands' sand-colored bricks, colored tiles, and wooden frames are proudly sourced from local villages in Java.
The indoor dining area has an open concept with a direct view to the open-plan kitchen. This arrangement aims to enrich experience for the customers.
The ambiance and atmosphere of the restaurant become other key focuses in the design. A glass ceiling is incorporated above the mezzanine area to maximise the sunlight coming in. As the day goes by, the restaurant will be filled with changing light and shadows, making the space even more alive.
As the design revolves around retaining the original house foundation, the restaurant construction became a renovation project that utilised the existing building without reducing the room requirement and aesthetics.
The main intention in the design is creating balance across different spaces in the restaurant while keeping a sense of harmony between indoors and outdoors. Hence, Locaāhands Dining Club presents as a modern and functional space with a timeless aesthetics.
