Owen Lam: HKIA Young Architect Award 2024 Winner

Owen Lam, the visionary behind Afloat Studio, has made waves in the architectural scene with his innovative approach to design. Based in Hong Kong, Afloat Studio draws inspiration from the idea of floating—whether on water or in the air—invoking a sense of spontaneity that encourages exploration of unique spatial experiences. This philosophy blurs the lines between spaces, creating captivating "in-between" environments. 

Owen's creativity has not gone unnoticed. He has actively participated in various local and international competitions, earning accolades such as First Prize in the Central Glass International Architectural Design Competition and the Second Prize in the Shelter International Architectural Competition for Students in Japan. His work reflects a commitment to addressing real-world issues, particularly through his award-winning project, "RevitalAge: Bridging Generations."




This ambitious initiative aims to transform aging tenement buildings into vibrant intergenerational living spaces. With a significant number of elderly residents living alone in these structures, Owen’s design seeks to tackle their challenges head-on—limited mobility, social isolation, and inadequate living conditions. By enhancing accessibility and fostering a sense of community, his proposal creates an environment where both elderly and younger residents can thrive together. 


Key objectives of the project include providing suitable housing for the elderly, ensuring easy mobility with ramps and thoughtful layouts, and creating central common spaces that encourage interaction. Owen's approach combines modern design with respect for the existing urban fabric, preserving the essence of the neighborhood while optimizing living conditions. 

Through a thorough analysis of the site and careful consideration of residents' needs, Owen envisions a more inclusive community. His design not only enhances the quality of life for elderly residents but also revitalizes the spirit of the neighborhood, making it a place where dignity and happiness flourish.
